Graduating with his master degree from Yale University in 2000 under the tutelage of Frank Morelli, American bassoonist Michael R. Garza worked as the principal bassoonist of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra from 2001 to 2021. Born in Los Angeles but raised in Texas, while in the USA as a student and young professional, he worked in the Austin Symphony, as a freelancer in the New York City area, was a Tanglewood Music Center fellow and participated in both the Sarasota and Norfolk Chamber Music festivals.

As a south China-based music educator, he maintained an active studio of private bassoon students in Guangzhou, coached wind sectionals with younger symphonic ensembles such as the Guangzhou Symphony Youth Orchestra, and presented master classes in the region, notably in Hong Kong, Singapore and in the USA. Michael is married with his partner in Rome, Italy and continues to teach and perform within Europe, collaborate with musical colleagues in Europe on recording projects, and travel to the USA to work with the Pan Pacific Ensemble.
