Luis Marquez Teruel, 20, is originally from Maracaibo, Venezuela. Luis began bassoon at age ten and just one year later he was selected to play with the National Children’s Orchestra of Venezuela in the Salzburg Festival, at the Felsenreitschule conducted by Sir. Simon Rattle. He has won multiple competitions such as the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Auditions excerpt competition, and the 2021 Norma Hooks International Double Reed Society Young Artist Competition for Bassoon. Luis has made several solo appearances, on two occasions, he appeared in shows #355 (Carnegie Hall) and #368 (Interlochen) with From The Top. He has also participated in masterclasses with internationally known bassoonists such as Ole Kristian Dahl, Sophie Dervaux, Matthias Rácz, Benjamin Kamins, Bram Van Sambeek, and Christopher Millard. Luis is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studies with Daniel Matsukawa, principal bassoon of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
